Fun-filled family festival delights Ugie community
Once again, the PG Bison Family Festival in Ugie (formerly known as the Knockout Cup) was a great success, drawing together families, neighbouring communities and children of all ages over the weekend of 20 and 21 April to enjoy both sports and socialising.
Top honours in netball
Congratulations to the Elliot netball team for winning first prize in the under 25 leg of the tournament, along with a cash prize of R R7 500 and the coveted golden cup. In second place was the Maclear netball team who won R4 500. Our over-25 first-place winners were the MT Fletcher netball team winning themselves R7 500 and, in second place, the Elliot netball team taking home R4 500.
Soccer winners
The winning soccer team was FC Tigers from MT Fletcher, taking home the cash prize of R13 000, a trophy and a bus full of smiles. Coach Mawande Jiqo expressed how proud he was of his boys and said that it was a dream to make it to Ugie, with winning being a great example to the younger boys in the squad – showing them how determination and discipline yield rewards. In second place was the Elliot Eagles FC who earned themselves a cash prize of R7 500.
Community spirit
Proud soccer mom, Nthabie Lerabe, thanked PG Bison for continuing to host this festival over the years, which contributes a lot to the lives of children in the community, most significantly giving them something constructive to focus their young minds on.
“Many teams, families and community members come together from Ugie, Maclear, Elliot and MT Fletcher for this event, to participate, support, lend a helping hand and enjoy themselves,” says Nomvuyo Mehlo, PG Bison Cluster Liaison Manager.” Above all they have claimed ownership of the Family Festival and contribute immensely to every year being a better success than the one before. We entertained, catered and gifted PG Bison branded lunch box packs to over 3600 children over the duration of the two-day festival.
“It’s become something that everyone looks forward to on the annual calendar – a chance to put their sports skills to the test, but also to enjoy fun games for the children and a social gathering. This event gives the community of Ugie a sense of pride and incorporates the feeling of unity between the community and PG Bison Ugie Board Plant and the North East Cape Forest (NECF).”
