Artisan Joinery, based in George, received an exciting project brief in 2016 to make a fun-themed bed for a four year old boy. The design selected was a Land Rover Defender. Artisan Joinery chose to use PG Bison’s 16mm SupaWood (MDF).
SupaWood is PG Bison’s brand of medium density fibreboard (MDF). It offers excellent structural strength with superior screw-holding capability and machinability. SupaWood has a class-leading smooth 150 grit sanded finish, which enables the craftsman to create a perfect paint finish.
SupaWood blends the advantages of manufactured board with the natural properties of solid timber, allowing for most traditional wood working techniques.
Artisan Joinery had to bend and form the SupaWood to achieve the right finish and to meet the design requirements. Terry Ryan of Artisan Joinery says: “We used every process available to manufacture this bed. To create the bend on the bonnet we used the kerf cutting method. This allows the material to bend. We wet the face so that it wouldn’t tear and bent it over a former. The grooves were then glued to stay in that position. Once the final shape was perfect we primed it with Board Primer then sprayed a number of coats of child-safe, eco-friendly, zero VOC, water-based paint.”
The bed boasts real parts such as tyres, working head and spot lights, indicators, wheel arches, real Defender door hinges and, of course, the Land Rover Defender bonnet badge. This bunk bed features an extra length Queen size at the bottom and a 3/4 bed on the roof rack. It weighs approximately 600kgs and is the same size as a Land Rover Defender 90. So it’s quite sizable for a bed!
Artisan Joinery was established in 2014 by Terry and Kirsten Ryan in the Western Cape.
