6 smart solutions for small bathrooms

Given how much we do in spaces like bathrooms and kitchens, it is surprising how small these spaces often are. But there are ways of making sure you get the most out of your space. Here are six tips for your small bathroom.

Raised cabinets

If you install wall-mounted cabinets, you can create space underneath them, which creates additional storage space for things like a laundry basket or loo paper. Mounting the cabinets to the wall also helps protect potentially unedged components from damage caused by water spilling on the floor.

Shower curtains and sliding doors

Choosing a shower curtain or sliding doors instead of a hinged shower door can help to maximise space in small bathrooms. While the hinged shower door may look more streamlined, a shower curtain or sliding doors takes up less room since there is no need to worry about the space needed to open it.  A shower / tub combination is another space-saving option.

Build custom units

No matter how cleverly designed, there always seems to be an awkwardly positioned corner where nothing seems to fit, which can feel like a waste of space. Or maybe there’s a portion of wall standing empty. By building a custom storage unit, you can make the most of these less obvious square metres you have available and create more space.

Mirror, mirror

Another excellent decor option is to install a large mirror. In the same way that large tiles in light colours give the illusion of space, the reflective properties of mirrors also create the same illusion.

Round the corners

Tight spaces and sharp corners make for unnecessary bruises. Consider rounding the edges of your vanity or opting for a rounded pedestal basin.

Clever colours

The easiest way to make any space look bigger is to choose a light colour. Pale colours reflect light and offer an illusion that the room seems more spacious than it is. Bathrooms benefit from larger tiles featuring simple designs rather than small tiles with busy prints that make the bathroom feel more confined.
