How design and durable products keep offices relevant

Designing workplaces that remain aesthetically relevant and functional over time requires careful planning, thoughtful material choices and an understanding of how people use space.

For designers JP Beukes and Genevieve Francisco at One Point Zero and Base Workplace, materials shape the design outcome, lifespan, adaptability and functionality, qualities offered by PG Bison products.

Designing for growth and consistency

When Capital Legacy and the Legacy Planning Institute approached One Point Zero, they envisioned offices that could evolve as their organisations grew while maintaining a consistent look across all their locations.

One Point Zero first worked with Capital Legacy seven years ago at its Bryanston office in Johannesburg. Pleased with the design and materials specified, the company later commissioned One Point Zero to design offices in Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

More human-centred, more experiential, beyond aesthetics

Throughout these projects, the offices were designed to support daily work, while creating spaces where staff can collaborate, meet clients and step away from traditional desk-based environments. Material choices also shape how environments function and feel. Beyond aesthetics, they influence acoustics, comfort and longevity. Softer finishes such as carpets, upholstery and acoustic panels that complement PG Bison’s product range, help manage noise in open-plan settings, while natural materials including timber tones and textured finishes create warmer, more welcoming spaces that support wellbeing.

Companies want offices to feel like places people choose to spend time in and not spaces they feel obliged to occupy. Using reliable, well-designed and locally produced products such as PG Bison surfaces used in joinery elements also helps ensure these workplaces are not only visually appealing but durable enough to withstand long-term demands of everyday use.

Creating inspiring workspaces

In 2024, Legacy Planning Institute won Best Luxury Office Design and Build Studio in South Africa at the Luxury Lifestyle Global Awards, recognised for its innovative approach and craftsmanship. Designed by JP and Genevieve.

The project included co-working areas, a sleek reception and a coffee station, designed to create a motivating environment for young professionals in the insurance industry.

“PG Bison products were used extensively for desks, shelving and coffee stations, helping us create a consistent and durable material palette throughout the space. Their finishes allow for a clean, contemporary look while still bringing warmth and texture to the workplace”, says Genevieve Francisco, Head of Design and Workplace Strategist at Base workplace.

Adapting without losing design integrity, using timeless surfaces

“It is important that a workspace evolves without compromising its integrity. We choose colours that align with the overall concept, and PG Bison’s wide range allows us to adapt designs as trends change,” says Francisco.

PG Bison designs its products with durability, consistency and long-term relevance in mind. As workplaces continue to evolve, the materials that shape them should not need constant replacement.

Our surfaces are engineered for strength and everyday resilience, while offering timeless finishes that help designers create spaces that remain functional and visually appealing for years. Longevity is not only about lifespan, but also about sustaining performance, reducing waste and supporting responsible design.
