Empowering the Next Generation: PG Bison’s Ugie and Maclear Career Day
18 – 20 February 2025 – PG Bison reaffirmed its commitment to shaping a brighter future for young learners at its annual Ugie and Maclear Career Day, an initiative designed to equip high school students with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their tertiary education and future careers.

Inspiring Career Aspirations
Now in its third year, the Ugie and Maclear Career Day was born from a critical need within the community. Nomvuyo Mehlo, Cluster Liaison Manager at PG Bison, recalls the motivation behind the initiative:
“We noticed that many local matriculants were applying for roles they weren’t qualified for—such as operations manager positions with just a Grade 12 certificate. It became clear that young people in the area were unaware of the career opportunities available to them or the steps needed to pursue their aspirations.”

Guiding Future Leaders
Through PG Bison’s Infundo Programme, the company established this annual career event, focusing on Grade 9 learners—a crucial stage when students select subjects that will shape their future career paths.
“It’s not just about career guidance; it’s about giving these learners hope and showing them what’s possible,” says Nomvuyo Mehlo.
The career day roadshow brings together a range of tertiary institutions, including:
- Nelson Mandela University of Technology
- King Sabata Dalindyebo TVET College
- Ingwe TVET College
- Ikhala TVET College
- University of the Free State
- Rhodes University
- Banking Sector Education & Training Authority (BANKSETA)
These institutions provide valuable insights into career paths, study options, and bursary opportunities, helping students explore fields as diverse as diesel mechanics, forestry, and accounting.
Charmaine Smith, Director of the Infundo Programme, adds:
“We want learners to understand that there are multiple career pathways available to them—whether it’s through university, a technical qualification, or an apprenticeship.”

Bridging the Digital Divide
One of the most impactful aspects of this year’s event was the Wi-Fi installation at seven local schools, sponsored by PG Bison. This initiative ensures that students can access online career resources, research study opportunities, and stay informed beyond the event itself.
“Teachers have noticed that learners are more engaged and curious about their futures,” says Nomvuyo Mehlo.
Investing in Future Talent
Sibusiso Dlamini, PG Bison’s Executive: Human Capital and Stakeholder Relations, highlights the long-term vision behind the initiative:
“At PG Bison, we take great pride in shaping the future workforce. Through impactful initiatives like the Ugie and Maclear Career Day, we are not simply fostering careers—we are creating lasting opportunities for growth and success. This initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to developing talent.”
Ms. Indi Twenani, Deputy Principal of Sibabale Secondary School, echoes this sentiment:
“The PG Bison Career Day is an eye-opening event that directs our little dreamers to dream big.”

A Future of Possibilities
PG Bison remains steadfast in its mission to empower the next generation. Initiatives like the Ugie and Maclear Career Day are a testament to the company’s dedication to creating opportunities, fostering growth, and inspiring young learners to reach their full potential.
