Women in the workplace: Lydia Meyer

In South Africa, August is National Women’s Month. In honour of the women who work at PG Bison, we’re taking this opportunity to profile some of them. In this post we chat to Lydia Meyer, who works in the nursery at PG Bison’s South Cape Forests. Lydia is very shy, but her manager, Heinrich Meyer, told us what a hard worker she is, and how together with a team of two other women, Lydia helps to propagate more than 4 700 pine seedlings a year, protecting the long-term sustainability of the PG Bison business.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Lydia and I work in the nursery. I help to cultivate and plant the tree seedlings for the PG Bison forests. I have been working with the company for 26 years. I’m a single mom with four daughters. I’m a Christian and very involved with my church.

What gets you up in the mornings?

It’s good for me, as a woman, that I can get up in the morning and come to work and make sure I put bread on the table for my children.

Do you have any words of encouragement to share with other women?

I would encourage them to feel respect for themselves, to persevere with what they do, and to know that they matter.
