Mkhondo Knockout Cup
On 25 and 26 March 2023, PG Bison hosted the annual Mkhondo Knockout Cup, where neighbouring communities came together at the Kempville Stadium for an exciting day of sportsmanship, competition, and fun.
Christo Van Aardt, PG Bison Operations Manager, welcomed the community to the tournament and wished all the participating teams well. The morning started off with the netball and soccer players preparing to take the court and pitch respectively. When the games began, the spectators voiced their support as they were entertained and impressed by the skills displayed, where players demonstrated their ability to shoot, score, pass and defend, with great speed and precision.
All teams came well prepared, which made the tournament very competitive. But, as in any competition, the best team won. Congratulations to Omanqoba, the Total Football United, who took home a trophy and R15 000 in prize money, while the runners-up, Amabhubesi FC, received R10 000, and in third place, R5 000 was shared between Al Ahly FC and Man FC. The netball tournament winner was Mlilo Comprehensive School, taking home a trophy and prize of R 15 000. In second place was Amadlelo Secondary School, which received a R10,000 cash prize, and the third place went to Ndlela School, which received R5 000.
Sindi Nxumalo, Mlilo Comprehensive School netball coach said, “Thank you to PG Bison for the great tournament and hospitality. The prize money is much appreciated as it will help us get netball training equipment and the correct sports shoes for players who can’t afford to buy them. Halala PG Bison, Halala.”
The festivities extended beyond the sports. PG Bison ensured that it was a fun-filled event for the children in the community, as well as the players and spectators, by providing facilitated games for the children, meals for a total number of 3 000 children and community members, as well as providing goodie bags with sweet treats for the kids. “The event was remarkable, bringing people together under a common banner of sportsmanship and community. It demonstrates the power of sports to unite communities, foster new relationships, and nurturing a sense of belonging. This has become an annual event, eagerly anticipated by all who participate in it, also inspiring new generations of players for years to come,” said Nkosingiphile Hlatshwayo, PG Bison Community Liaison Offer.
